Opportunity Pitches

Formation of Teams of Two (2Teams)

Required Reading:

none

Reference Reading:

ScreeningOpportunities-28Dec07.pdf

Fun stuff (optional):

PoBronson-Hotmail.pdf

Preparation for Class:

Be prepared to do your first presentation to the class (see below). If you get nervous with public speaking, that's okay, we are a supportive group! Just prepare accordingly based on what you need to feel comfortable. Also come prepared to listen and engage in the other presentations. After the presentations we will be forming teams of two as a group. Remember, design is interactive. Also take a minute and complete this Prototyping Skills Self-Assessment print and bring to class.

Assignment Due (completed individually):

  1. Consider the feedback you have received on your opportunities via the Darwinator, and the in-class concept brainstorming. Pick the opportunity that at this point you would most wish to propose as a course project and that satisfies the Project mission statement. (You may to pitch a new opportunity that you did not submit to the Darwinator, however you must accelerate the need finding and concept generation in order to bring it up to speed. You may pitch a classmate's unused opportunity ONLY with their permission.)
  2. Prepare a 60-second presentation articulating the opportunity you have identified.
    • You will have exactly 60 seconds, not a second more, so please be sure your pitch fits well within that time. You should practice this talk a few times.
    • The essence of your pitch is to convince the class WHAT the opportunity is and WHY it is a great opportunity rather than HOW to solve it.
    • Make a single slide that includes include at least three elements: 1) Opportunity TITLE & DESCRIPTION, 2) Justification via customer NEEDS and/or external INSIGHTS, and 3) Representative SKETCH(es) from your concept exploration work (not a finalized product concept at this point.) Please do not include any animation or video.
    • Do NOT put your name anywhere on the slide (but DO put it in the filename). Obviously we will know whose concept is whose from the presentations, but when we do the group voting and selecting with the posted prints, it works better to focus on the ideas and not be distracted by the names.
  3. NO LATER THAN 12 noon on Tuesday, February 16, submit your ONE pdf slide (in landscape pdf format) to the Opportunity Pitches assignment folder on webcafe.
    • We can not accommodate late work, so if you have a hard time with deadlines, hand this in on Monday. We will create a single integrated slide deck for all the pitches for the class. If you do not follow these directions, we will not be able to include your slide in the deck.
    • IMPORTANT Print this slide out and bring to class also! You may print your slide in color, but please check that it prints okay in black and white too. Hand-write your name on the back of the print-out. Do not put your name anywhere on the front.
